Several of you have emailed asking for Thanksgiving outfit ideas...and this year I'm looking for the sartorial equivalent of comfort food. But I also want something pretty, dammit! I want to offset all of the hard and ugly of Fall 2013. So whether you've been dealing with your own form of #takethatbreastcancer (and OMG I hope not) or just had a crazy few months....these are for you.
A Glamorous, Long-Sleeved, Maxi
Nothing adds drama like a long, sweeping skirt. I'm picturing myself regally entering the dining room: red lipstick firmly in place, shoulders back, one (sparse) eyebrow perfectly arched, my patchy, bird-like hair - UGH!! SEE? It's why I need the glamorous dress. Such effortless elegance. Besides, these things are crazy-comfortable.
[Dresses 1, 2, 6 and 8 are nursing-friendly. Dresses 4 - 8 would work for pregnancy.]
Awfully boobalicious, I know. Kinda why I like it. A plunging v-neck (and artful ruching) does wonders for hiding a poochy stomach. I'd layer it over a pretty bra and probably pin the neckline a touch, or layer it over a lacy cami.
Thank you for your blog! I started reading it when I first got pregnant and it gave me hope that motherhood didn't mean instantly dowdy and a lifetime of ill fitting jeans. Well, now my baby is here and your recent posts (leggings, docs) inspired me to bust out my leggings and combat boots. These *may* be my maternity leggings and this sweater from gap is longer in back than in front- perfect for providing the necessary bum coverage. I also like how loose it is- I'm only eleven weeks postpartum so the loose fit is perfect for lifting up to breastfeed, hiding a poochy tummy, and disguising the uneven silhouette that bunched up breast pads give you. The combat boots are nice because in my mind they are decidedly not "mom shoes" and with a new baby I need a little something to remind me that I'm still me and not just a shushing milk machine.
Again thanks for the inspiration. Feeling stylish helps make me even more confident as a mama. Keep killing cancer!
Alena - thanks for sending in these fabulous pics!! I especially love the lady-like bag with the combat boots, and your punky haircut is giving me hope in the months ahead. Chick, you look awesome.
Mamas! One of my new sisters* sent me outfit pics as a little "thinking-of-you-today" kind of thing. Jai grabbed one of her boyfriend's shirts and GENIUS RESULTED.
(She's my sister-in-law via my own sister's marriage - make sense?)
I love how this technique shows off a waist and a great rack (and Sister's got both).
Jai wore this outfit bartending....which isn't all that different from mom duty, you know? Wiping up spills, dealing with unreasonable, hard-to-understand demands from people who can barely walk...I mean it's practically the same thing, right? Except, uh...she gets paid in real money. Versus kisses.
BTW - I'm renaming this feature "Reader Style" instead of "Mom Street Style". While the focus of this blog won't change, I don't want to make my, uh, three readers who aren't moms feel left out. And cute, practical outfit inspiration can come from anyone - not just moms.
IknowIknow. Nobody cares. Moving on.
Jai, you look awesome. Thanks for the pics and inspiration, Babe.
This is the pooch-hiding maxi dress I was searching for all summer. Looking at the back, it might be nursing-friendly, too. The only word of caution is that the lower back means you'll need a cute strapless bra: no dingy nudes. This dress comes in a rainbow of colors. I'd wear it now with a long, cozy sweater.
In case my sexy little Bradamant bodysuit wasn't enough (and it is one of Mike's favs) I found a total sex-kitten wig. For under $50. It's from a line of wigs called Forever Young, and the line is aptly named. They focus on young, sexy styles, and the wigs are crazy cheap (for medically necessary wigs, not costume wigs). The one I'm wearing is Edge Savvy, and I'll be taking it into Shannon for a bang trim. Ha! Isn't that funny? Taking my wigs in for trims...man. Add that to the loooong list of Things I Never Thought I'd Say.
So tomorrow (Wednesday) is my third chemo treatment. Which means....after Wednesday, I'll only have ONE TREATMENT LEFT. Crazy, right? So, to celebrate, we're doing a little Bradamant giveaway. And by "little" I mean THREE. We'll have THREE winners. (Oooo...one for each chemo. OMG - I'm so macabre and dramatic these days.)
Let's just go with three lucky winners, and leave it at that. :)
Each winner will be able to chose one Bradamant bodysuit. But what to choose, what to choose?
...but I remember being really impressed with the versatility of the Pirette.
Of course, there's always this gorgeousness, called The Warrior:
Which will you choose?
How To Enter:
You get one entry for liking Bradamant on Facebook, and one entry for signing up to recieve emails about Bradamant sales and new releases. (Scroll to the very bottom of the Bradamant website - the sign up box is on the left.)
Then, let me know in the comments below how you've entered and...done! I'll announce the three winners in a week.
I've been looking for a new black bag. It's not a need, granted, but I could...uh...really use one? Anyway, this search has been ongoing since last year. I like bags that are simple, but a little bit special. However, if anything veers into "it-bag" territory, I'm out. I prefer anti-it bags for some reason (and that reason may or may not be a $6000 price tag).
So. I came across a discount code from Fossil to take $25 off any purchase over $125...and since I haven't checked out Fossil since 1993, I wandered one over to their little internet space. And whoa.
They have clothes? Uh....really, really cute clothes? And bags. Good bags. Yeah...
Time for shopping enabling! (Cause if I'm going to do this, I'm taking you all down with me. And based on the comments from last week's post, I'm not the only shopping enabler in this bunch.)
I'm thrilled to have OE back (remember this?). OE is a dear friend, and the fabulously talented mama behind Girl Meets Baby. I'm gaga over her take on Doc Martens. Enjoy!!
Hello again ANMJ readers... Eek! I am not sure if I am more excited to re-guest post here or cover this awesome topic: good ol’ Doc Martens.
Ok y’all, they’re back — in a big way. And no longer are they strictly reserved for the punk rock grunge culture or ‘Hot Topic’ crowd. These babies are making their way into real deal fashion. My eighth grade self is blindly diving head-first back into this trend.
I am here today to show you a few ways to style these bad boys and hopefully give you a bunch of tips on size, fit, and breaking them in with the least amount of pain as possible.
