Mamas, it feels like I have spent the last 4+ years wearing nothing but jeans and cut-offs. Which, you know, is kinda my thing. But in the days leading up to my sister's wedding, as I (repeatedly) got all gussied up, I realized something: I like pretty.
But in the case of a chiffon maxi skirt, 'pretty' doesn't translate very well to messy art projects or playground time, or even walking if steps are involved. Sorry honey - Mum can't hold your hand, she has too much skirt. Good luck with those stairs, though!
But you know what, Mamas? Some days...I just don't care. Some days I don't want to lug around diapers, I don't want to wear flat shoes, and some days I just want to put on a pretty skirt.
Obviously these days will require either a nanny, a husband, or children who calmly watch movies while their crazy mother swans around in chiffon.
Luckily for me, my I NEED PRETTY DAY fell on a Saturday. And Mike humors loves me. So out we went - the four of us (Mike carried the diapers). We just walked around, got some ice cream, had a beer. And you know what? It really wasn't bad. I was still able to be involved and have fun.
Ok, so I wasn't super fast during our game of tag.

The key for me was to find an affordable chiffon maxi skirt (I happened upon this one on the clearance rack at Ann Taylor). Even when I wore this out at night (sans kids), it got stepped on, dragged on the ground when I sat, and was a nightmare in the bathroom. So yeah: cheap is good.
I really like these fancy, swirly, swishy skirts paired best with a simple tee. Tuck it in, or try the knot trick to help hide a stomach pooch.
And when the weather cools?

Denim looks so good with pretty, pretty skirts. Next date night, this is what I'm wearing.
Best of all? On a cold fall day, pair these skirts on with a cozy sweater and tall boots.

Mike audibly groaned when I pulled out this sweater. It's my daily winter-wear...and has been for the last four years.
But yeah. It's the new me. Once a week month I will dress all pretty-pretty. Or at least once a quarter. I mean...four times a year? That's not too much to ask, right?
Don't worry Mamas - we'll get back to talking about jeans and flats soon enough. I think I'm still on a high from so much all-night dancing. Nothing like a few nights out to make a mama feel like a rock star.
xo,
S
