Hot Cold Weather Boots for Moms

You’re a mom now.  Let’s face it, much as you may love your stilettos (or maybe just the idea of them), unless you’re going to be a sitting-on-the-sidelines, too-cool-for-school mom,  you need some sensible shoes from time to time, and that includes toasty winter boots with good traction.  You can’t stay inside all winter long, so how else are you going to safely frolic with your sweet potato in rain, sleet and snow?  Well sister, you’re in luck, because sensible doesn’t necessarily mean sickly anymore.  Whether you’re looking for boots that will get you through three-foot drifts or help you hail a cab without losing your toes to frostbite, you can pull this whole winter look off and still maintain your sense of style.  We’ve found a bevy of cute and toasty winter boots, all waterproof, that fit the bill.  All links lead to Zappos, because they carry almost every shoe on earth.   

Out of Town Boots
For a day spent packing snowballs, digging snow forts, pulling your peanut in a sled or braving the short but oh so bitterly cold walk to the grocery three blocks away, you’ll need some serious winter boots.  The KEEN Betty boot is a bit loud, but with 200 grams of KEEN.WARM, which is a bamboo/polyester insulation, it’s going to get you through the drifts and its fun western take is on trend for the season.  The Ugg Meridian has the company’s trademark sheepskin lining; removable/replaceable sheepskin foot bed and the pom-pom zipper can’t be beat for snow bunny fun.   The North Face Nuptse boot is a hardcore winter boot at a very affordable price point.  With 700 grams of down insulation and Ice Pick temperature-sensitive pods that increase traction, no one can possibly doubt your commitment to winter fun, and, as Shana noted, they still manage to look cute with her much-touted skinny jeans.

This chic set of boots will take you to wintertime museum outings,  on long city trots and to tea and toast after, all while providing waterproof comfort, great traction and toasty insulation.  My absolute, hands-down favs are the Ugg Belfair duck boot in Bouillon.  They’re a little pricer than what I had planned to spend on winter kicks, but something about the modern take on these 80’s flashback duck boots really gets me going.  I love, love the color, could see wearing them every day  January through February, and considering the Ugg price point generally starts at $200, they suddenly seem like a steal.  I like them over skinny jeans with a voluminous winter white cowl neck sweater.  The Khombu Solar boot in black is perfect over leggings or with tights and a skirt.  Lined with cozy faux fur throughout and with a Thermolite footbed cushion, your feet will stay warm all day long.  The 2” heel provides a nice but still stable lift.  The eco-conscious North Face Payton boot delivers on enviro-warm fuzzies, comfort, warmth and style.  I love these with a cuffed jean and chocolate brown cashmere turtleneck.

JUST IN TIME!!! I have been laboring over this decision for the past few weeks and your ideas are so inspiring and confirming. I have lived in Colorado for twenty-four years and have never loved my snow boots. Well, maybe my purple moon boots from the fourth grade:) The last few years I have been wearing hand-me-down boots from my mother-in-law which turn out to be the cutest leather/shearling/platform/front zipper combination to come out of Summit county in the late 70's, but let me tell you that the cold rating on those little cuties is none too extreme. They make better rake-the-leaves, stroll-for-coffee-on-a-mild-fall day boots. So thank you! And my kids will thank you because I will no longer cut our sledding trips short and pawning off the blame on one of them (oooooh...Enid, are your fingers cold sweetheart? well, we better head home then;)
